The 5 Verbs of Learning: Reflect
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
Philippians 4:8
The last two learning verbs in discipleship are reflect and celebrate. Perhaps we are most accustomed to think of discipleship in terms of these two words. Our engagement with the Scriptures is heavily based on reflection although perhaps not enough on how our life compares to what is being said. Our worship is a celebration of God in our midst although perhaps lacking in celebrating the personal victories since the last time we gathered together.
Reflect and celebrate are activated by the practice of the other three verbs. Without imagine, connect and risk being practiced, reflect and celebrate can become quite theoretical. We talk about life instead of living it. When we actively involve the first three verbs, our reflection in the Scriptures re-aligns us and we celebrate what God is doing, which motivates us to imagine, connect and risk some more.- a wonderful integration of experience and theology.
